Is It Time for a Beauty Routine Refresh?
- par Kylie Eustace
Have you ever had that feeling that it’s time for a big reorganise and a proper clean-up?
A fresh start. A reset. A little change.
Maybe you’re ready to switch to more non-toxic products and refresh your beauty routine — or perhaps you’ve just realised that makeup and personal care products do have a shelf life, and that lipstick or mascara in the bottom of your makeup bag from 10 years ago really does need to go!
There’s nothing like a new season (or a new year) to start fresh.
If you haven’t already incorporated clean beauty into your routine, now is the perfect time.
Non-toxic, healthy personal care products are so much better for your skin, health and overall wellbeing.
If you’re unsure which ingredients to avoid, we recommend having a read through the Safe Cosmetics Australia Hotlist of ingredients to be mindful of in personal care.

Some of the Ingredients We Choose to Avoid at Kylie’s Professional
At Kylie’s Professional, we believe what you put on your skin should be safe, nourishing and supportive of long-term skin health — not just designed to look good for a few hours.
That’s why we choose to avoid many common cosmetic ingredients that can be irritating, hormone and skin barrier disruptive, or unnecessary when safer alternatives exist.
We Choose to Avoid:
- Synthetic fragrance (parfum) – a major trigger for sensitive skin and headaches, and can hide many undisclosed chemicals
- Phthalates – often found in fragrance and linked to hormone disruption
- Parabens – preservatives that can mimic estrogen in the body
- Formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives – known irritants and potential health concerns
- Isothiazolinones (MI/MCI) – strong sensitisers linked to contact allergies
- Certain chemical sunscreen filters such as oxybenzone and octocrylene – associated with hormone and environmental concerns
- Volatile silicones (D4, D5, D6) – can bio-accumulate in the environment and offer no real skin benefits
- PEGs and ethoxylated ingredients – may contain harmful manufacturing by-products and can increase skin penetration of other chemicals
- Nano ingredients – we prefer non-nano minerals that sit on the surface of the skin rather than penetrating it. Nano particles have been proven harmful in aerosol
- Talc – may be contaminated with asbestos; we choose safer natural alternatives instead
What We Choose Instead
We focus on vegan, cruelty-free, non-nano mineral pigments, plant waxes and oils, water free formulas, gentle clean preservatives and skin-supportive ingredients — because makeup and skincare should care for your skin, not compromise it.

A Perfect Time to Try Something New
Refreshing your makeup isn’t just about what you remove — it’s also about what you invite in.
It’s the perfect time to experiment with your everyday look, try something new and expressive, or simply brighten things up with a fresh blush, eyeshadow or lipstick that makes you feel amazing.
So, How Long Should You Really Keep Your Makeup?
Let’s get to the facts — because shelf life and hygiene really do matter for healthy skin.
Loose Mineral Products
Pure loose minerals are inorganic and contain no water, so bacteria cannot grow in them.
In theory, loose mineral makeup can last a very long time. However, contamination can occur from:
- Wet or dirty brushes
- Moisture exposure
- Poor storage
For safety, once opened, we recommend discarding loose mineral products after 36–48 months if they haven’t been used up — although with good hygiene and storage, they may still be safe beyond this timeframe.
Cream & Liquid Products
Any product that contains oils and/or water will oxidise over time once exposed to air.
When products go off, they often:
- Smell unpleasant or rancid
- Change texture or colour
If it smells bad, chances are it is — and it’s best to throw it out.
Note: Some unperfumed natural products may have a mild wax or oil scent, which is normal.
